The placement of the Moon in Aquarius is often regarded by astrologers as uncomfortable. What does it mean? The Moon, being the ruler of the sign of Cancer, is soft, absorbing and receptive by nature. The Cancer and the fourth house are connected with the family and origins. The family by its definition implies the mother and the father, the feeling of belonging and security, which is also emotional. Memory is the natural characteristics of the sign of Cancer. It is said that Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) have a very good memory and, in extreme cases, they are resentful and vindictive. Why the memory? Let us imagine that one morning we wake up remembering nothing about who we are, we do not know our identity. Who are we? Nobodies. The Cancer gives life. The Cancer tells us: I come from here, here are my roots. Therefore, the Cancer must remember, as the memory is essential for giving life. Thus we know why the Moon absorbs and receives.
It is actually difficult to describe what or who the Aquarius is. It is a masculine, fixed air sign. It is ruled by Uranus and the “old” planet Saturn. The Aquarius represents the 11th house in the birth chart. Uranus is vague and indefinable, as everything it sends us is unknown to us, ordinary people. Therefore, how can we describe the unknown and undefined? Uranus is unpredictable. I would often say: I expect the unexpected.
Actually, the opposition of Cancer is not Capricorn, but Aquarius. The Capricorn will build a structure, create a form in which the Cancer can feel secure in spite of the emotional chill. The Capricorn will not surprise you – it is predictable. Capricorns erect monuments, hang diplomas on the walls, wear orders and decorations. They do it, because Cancers need to remember things. The Aquariuses, the messengers of the new order, ruin these structures.
If the nature of the Moon in its own sign of Cancer is the memory, then what is the nature of the Moon in Aquarius? What shall such a Moon remember? Remembering is not its task. This Moon placement is not about history – it is about the future. The Moon, absorptive and receptive by nature, absorbs everything that Uranus sends – that is, the new and unexpected. Therefore, how does the Cancer-like Moon feel in Aquarius? How does it react to the hail shower of the unknown? It panics.
The Moons in Aquarius like to sleep alone (if they can sleep at all), cannot stand the strange, clinging bodies of others. They suffocate. However, they like to feel that somebody behind the wall is watchful, giving them a substitute of security. The night is not a suitable time for such Moons – and they must sleep sometime.
They do not feel good in modern buildings of glass and steel, because they are discordant with the nature of the Moon. They do not feel good in the soft and heavy home surroundings, because they are discordant with the nature of Aquarius. They dislike dark holes, gloomy pits, mouldy lairs and labyrinths. They like wide open spaces.
People are a drama for the Aquarius Moons. In the third house, the Gemini meets their immediate environment and neighbours. In the 7th house, the Libra starts relationships. In the 11th house, the Aquarius meets groups, masses of people. It is a paradox – it meets masses, but it is alone.
Aquarians do not get attached to people and things. They start relationships easily and equally easily break them. They can make themselves remembered, but they do not have to. They do not need it. They just go by.
While the Aquarius Moons spread the new things and pass them on to people, they actually do not like people. They do not like them, because others seem different to them – and because the Aquarius Moons are seen by others as different. The Aquarius Moons would like to feel they belong into a group, but they cannot. They look for people like themselves, but they usually cannot find them. For the masses, they are irrational, unpredictable, odd. For themselves – they are ordinary.
They do nothing for the sake of approval, glory or fame. They do not boast or roar like Leos. They just do not care. They establish groups, they gather, they participate in meetings. They lead people to a different, better world. They are permanent wanderers without a fixed home. They are above everyone else, above themselves, above their own egos. The ego is in Leo – the opposing Aquarius has no ego.
There were two famous women with the Aquarius Moon, both loved by the masses – Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana. They both seemed to have everything - fame and money, but in fact, they owned nothing. They were in relationships with the powerful, but they broke these relationships. They could not love, because there was nobody to love.
Diana – the People’s Princess – what a drama it was for a solar Cancer to have an Aquarius Moon! (An Aquarius with a Cancer Moon does not seem to have such dilemmas. He or she would at most, as a sign of Aquarian extravagance, put a fridge into the living room). She was subject to constant indecision, for whom she was supposed to live – for her family, for the country, for herself? She seems to have partly fulfilled herself in charity. She spread the idea of unity to the masses.
Marilyn Monroe was a sweet blonde, a sex icon. She excellently used her Leo ascendant in self-creation and the first house Neptune facilitated the art of self-disguise. She was not as sweet as she looked. People with such a strong Air element are not particularly sweet. She was very thought-oriented. Her Aquarius Moon was badly placed in the open and outgoing seventh house. She had to receive all the time, she was exposed. She asked herself questions such as “Who am I? Am I myself (Neptune on her ascendant), or am I other people (the Moon on her descendant)?” People walked right through her; she walked right through them.
